2008 NFL Super Bowl 42 Giants VS Patriots

2008 NFL Super Bowl 42The undefeated New England Patriots and the New York Giants are on their way to Super Bowl 42, the championship game of the National Football League. The New York Giants were a wild-card team and had to win three straight post-season games to reach the Super Bowl. Despite frigid temperatures in Wisconsin Sunday to Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field, New York clawed a 23-20 victory overtime.

The New York Giants are only the second National Conference team ever advance to the Super Bowl as a wild-card and so choose to return to the championship game for the first time in seven years.

New York Giants now faces the task of playing New England, 21-12 winners over the San Diego Chargers first Sunday.

Frigid weather wrapped the Patriots’ home field in Foxboro, Massachusetts, New England quarterback Tom Brady did not show his usual precision, throwing three interceptions. But Brady completed 22 of 33 passes, two of them for touchdowns, and running back Laurence Maroney, immersed in a yard area by the end of third score.

San Diego came close to the end zone four times, but the New England Patriots’ defense stopped the Chargers, whose only points came on four field goals by Nate Kaeding.

  4. Both the Patriots and Giants have great depth, many highly skilled players, a good system, good leadership and good execution. The Giants are somewhat like the Chargers in that both teams got off to difficult starts. Both teams finished very strong – the Giants even stronger than the Chargers.

The Giants have similar strengths to the Patriots on defense – a strong pass rush consisting of a solid line and athletic linebackers. The Giants are possibly faster at some positions and stronger at others, but on the whole, the front seven on both teams are comparable.

If the Patriots have any edge, it is in the secondary, where the Patriots have one All Pro caliber player at corner and another at safety – Asante Samuel and Rodney Harrison. It is also in the secondary, though, where both of these teams are most subject to being exploited. The Giants can outsize the secondary with Burress, and the Patriots can outsize the secondary with Moss.

The Patriots are deeper at receiver, with at least five solid weapons. The Giants are somewhat stronger at running back with two really good ground game runners.

The Patriots have these team stats:

    Offense 36.8 411.3 295.7 115.6
    Defense 17.1 288.3 190.1 98.3

The Giants have these team stats:

    Offense 23.3 331.4 197.1 134.3
    Defense 21.9 305.0 207.3 97.7

The Patriots generate more total yards on offense (411.3) and give up fewer total yards on defense (288.3).

Patriots have a much wider point spread between what they score and what they give up, but that made little difference in game 17, where these teams really fought hard. Patriots had to overcome a 12 point deficit to win the game.

Patriots have more weapons, more ways to win in a close game. Giants are not out of this by any means, but I do favor the Patriots to win. If the Giants play as well or better than they did in the final regular season game, it could be a VERY close Super Bowl game, full of excitement.

I am really looking forward to it!
